School Placement Information:
Wheeler Middle School is composed of 44% white, 22.2% Black, 17% Hispanic, and other student populations. We have access to special education inclusion classrooms at all grade levels, as well as resource and fully self contained environments for students who meet the need requirements. 44% of our students are receiving free or reduced-cost lunch, and the median household income is $50,592 compared to the state average of $66,420. At Wheeler Middle School we have been given access to technology in the form of iPads, MacBook products, and online resources such as Measuring up Live. We are not mandated to incorporate Springboard, a scripted curriculum, into our curriculum, but we do pull from it as a supplemental resource. I have few special circumstances that impact my planning and delivery of instruction, I am actually lucky enough to have a strong amount of support and freedom in my instruction. We do have grade-level data teams and structured planning teams that contribute to my pacing, but in a very positive and autonomous way.
Teaching Placement Information:
I teach 6th Grade English and Social Studies in a middle school which teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grades as part of the middle school environment. We teach for 6 periods a day, to 2 separate sections of students. I have one general education section and one inclusion section with about 19 general education students and 9 students with special needs. I teach 4 periods of English and 2 periods of Social studies, I divided amongst the two sections, so I see all 60 or so kids throughout the day but in separate sections; I currently have one section of 27, and one section of 26. My students are fairly reflective of the overall school breakdown, but with a higher representation of white students compared to students of other ethnicities. After their diagnostic assessments, I have found the median skill level of my students to be at about 58% knowledge of 6th grade English skills, not including the students with special needs. Both of my classes have students who are at grade level or above, or approaching grade level, and have students who are well below grade level. At Wheeler Middle School, we participate in bi-weekly structured teacher planning time (STPT), which is used to go over relevant data, and group plan for upcoming lessons. We also have bi-monthly CARE meetings where we take time to discuss individual students and what their needs are. We have many resources and systems in place at Wheeler Middle School to support students both academically and emotionally, and we have systems to support the needs of our teachers and staff as well.
